Let’s talk about some of the top benefits for practicing Martial Arts – specifically for 5- and 6-year olds!
Children this age are in a unique growth period in their life. They are refined in their gross motor skills, but need to develop an appropriate level intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially. Martial Arts can help in each of these areas.
Intellectually
Five- and 6-year-olds learn at a rapid pace – but, they typically have a hard time retaining information beyond three commands. Martial Arts teaches them how to demonstrate great focus by processing a large amount of information at one time and showing great memory by retaining four or more commands at once while staying in order.
Physically
Physically, 5- and 6-year olds have a basic foundation for leg, arm, core, and abdominal development, but still lack a lot of strength. Martial Arts helps them build good balance by not falling down kicking for high reps, by showing good control of their body while keeping it in motion, and by demonstrating fitness by applying good technique to exercises.
Emotionally
Five- and 6-year-olds are still learning to regulate their emotions, and will often act silly, or bouncy, when nervous or excited. Martial Arts teaches them how to have discipline when working with their peers, and demonstrate confidence when performing under pressure.
Socially
Socially, 5- and 6-year-olds enjoy the spotlight, but tend to lack proper sportsmanship. Martial Arts teaches them how to have teamwork in competitive situations and how show self-control when it’s not their turn.
