Weekly Update – February 25, 2018
SKILL STRIPES OF THE WEEK – BLACK AND PURPLE
On Monday and Tuesday, students will have a shot at earning their Black Stripe:
Early Skillz – Running
Basic Skillz – Fitness
Kids/Teens/Adults – One-Steps/Sparring – White, Yellow, Orange, and Sr. Orange Belts will have to have to perform their one-steps without assistance or instruction to earn their black stripe. Green belts and higher ranks will need to spar at an appropriate belt rank level to earn their black stripe. Students will be able to earn their black stripe any time from February 26 through testing.
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, students will have a shot at earning their Purple Stripe:
Early Skillz – Crawling
Basic Skillz – Memory
Kids/Teens/Adults – Form – All students in our kids or teen class will need to perform half of their form without assistance or instruction in order to earn their purple stripe. Students who can perform their entire form without assistance or instruction will earn their rainbow stripe, which will be placed over their purple stripe. Students may earn their purple or rainbow stripe any day of class beginning February 28. Students must have their rainbow stripe in order to test.
Students will be tested on their form knowledge as a group at the beginning of forms practice, prior to any instruction. This will be the only time in class for the day they can earn their purple or rainbow stripe. Once students receive instruction or assistance with their form, they are not eligible to earn their stripe until the next class they attend.
Students will be learning the following forms this testing cycle:
Basic Skillz – Chon-Ji
Beginners (White and Yellow Belts) – Ki-Bon
Intermediates (Orange – Sr. Purple Belts) – Won-Hyo
Advanced (Blue to Sr. Red Belts) – Hwa-Rang
Black belts are assigned forms according to their ranks:
1st degree Probationary and Recommended Black Belts: Gwan-Gae
1st degree Decided Black Belts: Po-Eun
1st degree Senior Black Belts: Gae-Baek
2nd degree Black Belts: Choon-Jang
2nd degree Decided Black Belts: Yu-Shin
2nd degree Senior Black Belts: Ul-Ji
All forms can be found on our student website, fortbendtaekwondo.com/videos. White, Yellow and Orange belts can also find videos of their one-steps here as well. Remember that these videos are meant to supplement in-class learning, not take the place of it.
HELP US BUILD OUR KINDNESS CHAIN!
Students are off to a great start building our random acts of kindness chain! Remember, our goal is to have the chain go around the ENTIRE school. We estimate that each student needs to complete 10 acts of kindness and chain links in order for this to happen.
Our kindness chain is part of our February Character Path to Mastery. Our physical path is a squat challenge. Students can pick up a log sheet at the front desk for both paths to log in what they’re doing. Students who log 10 acts of kindness and 20/30 days of the challenge will earn a Fort Bend TaeKwonDo tumbler.

JOIN TEAM FORT BEND TKD FOR SOME 5K RUN FUN!
As part of my preparation for my testing in January, I’m running a 5K every month. Yesterday, I ran the Rodeo Run with Nathaniel and Gabriel Richardson, Adam Richardson, Holli Pierce Richardson and their cousin – and it was WAAAAY more fun than going it alone. Plus, all of the Bachers – Abbey Bacher, Samantha Bacher, Brianna Bacher, Teena Bacher and Rob were at the finish line, cheering us on – and that helped a ton, too!
So – I’m issuing a challenge to ALL students and their families to join Roni Nicole Mendoza and me for the next one, The Lucky Charm 5K, which is right here in Katy!
This has both a 5K race and a kids K race! And, if you enter the code FTBENDTKD into the coupon area, you’ll save 15% off the registration!

Can’t make that one? That’s cool – then join me for the Compassion Katy 5K Color Run on Saturday, April 7! This event benefits Christ Clinic, Clothed by Faith, Compassion Katy, Hope Impacts and Katy Christian Ministries, nonprofits that aid the underserved in the Katy community. and includes color stations where participants are showered with colored corn starch as they pass by. We’ll be getting white t-shirts made for participants which will get colored along the way – and then you’ll be able to wear them in class! When you sign up, be sure to click on join group/team and then select Fort Bend TKD to receive $5 off the registration fee: https://runsignup.com/Race/Register/RaceGroup-446699…
Be sure to register by February 28 as prices go up for both events on March 1.
