OG Sparring Rules
Taekwondo America tournament sparring rules will be governing the sparring competition (hits only allowed between the belt and shoulders and on the red helmet. Punches to the head, illegal target areas, excessive contact will receive warnings. Drawing blood results in automatic disqualification. Excessive contact can result in two warnings.)
On the first warning, the opponent receives a point. On the second warning, the opponent receives 2 additional points. On the 3rd warning, the competitor is disqualified from that match).
Points can only be earned inside the ring (competitors must be in the black squares to score). Warnings can be earned at any point in the match.
Sparring point scoring
1 point:
each punch
basic kick to the body
2 points:
basic kick to the head
jump OR spin kick to the body
3 points:
jump OR spin kick to the head
jump spin kick to the body (includes 360 kicks)
4 points:

In addition, each time a point is scored, the judge will stop the match, announce the point, and begin the match again.
Matches will run 1.5 minutes with an ongoing clock – time will continue to run even though breaks will be called to announce points. Time will be stopped only for an injury or if both competitors go out of the ring.
In the event of a tie, a 15 second tie breaker will take place. The match will NOT be stopped to announce points in a tie-breaker.
One-Step Rules
Two competitors will go against each other per round. Each competitor will alternate between their one steps in consecutive order: (1, 1,; 2, 2; 3, 3).
After each one-step (1, 1,), judges will determine who performed the combination better and award a point to that person).
The competitor with the most points will advance on in our Gold Medal bracket. The competitor who does not have the most points will be placed into our Secondary Bracket where they will have a shot at competing for 2nd or 3rd place.

Team Sparring
Team sparring for all teams takes place at noon. Here are the ring assignments:
Noon | |||
Team Sparring | Ring 1 | Ring 2 | Ring 3 |
Black Belt Teams | Intermediate Teams | Advanced Teams |
Teams can wear a t-shirt and either white or black taekwondo pants. The t-shirt does NOT have to be a Fort Bend TKD t-shirt if the team wants to wear matching t-shirts. If the team chooses to not coordinate their clothing, then a Fort Bend TKD shirt will need to be worn.
With team sparring, the 1st teammate on each team will spar. Then the 2nd teammate, and finally, the third. Each match will run for 30 seconds. Points will accumulate across each teammate’s round. The team with the most total number of points will be deemed the winner of that round.
Warnings will also accumulate. Each team has 6 warnings PER TEAM for the team round. One point will be award PER WARNING to the other team. If a team receives a 7th warning, the entire team will be disqualified from that round.
The team will choose the order of competitors each round.
